This collection of characterized bioactive compounds was originally compiled by MicroSource Discovery Systems for the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), the Huntington’s Disease Society of America (HDSA), the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Association, and the Hereditary Disease Foundation (HDF).  It was purchased in December, 2001 by the ALS Association via ICCB-Longwood post-doctoral fellow Qing Liu.  Three quarters of the compounds in the collection are FDA-approved and the rest - which include some controlled substances such as cannabinoids - are known to influence brain activity.

The current collection (NINDS Custom Collection II) was purchased in 2006 jointly by ICCB-Longwood and the NERCE/NSRB infectious disease screening program.

Investigators wishing to screen the maximum number of FDA-approved drugs can achieve ~46% coverage (561 compounds) of the FDA set by screening both NINDS and Prestwick.  Including the ICCB Biomol Known Bioactives will increase coverage to ~47% of the FDA set, as there is some redundancy among these three libraries

For chemical structures and more information about each compound, please go to the ICCB-Longwood Screensaver site.
